Water Filters
The
water that comes from our faucets should be
clean, but the facts are that most of the water
flowing from our taps contain chemicals and
contaminates that the EPA states is safe to
drink in certain levels.
If you want a complete list of all the
possible contaminants the EPA allows, you can
view the EPA's standards, and the possible
source of each contaminant along with its
possible health effects, at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/mcl.html.
No
one wants to drink contaminated water, and
bottled water can get very expensive, so what
are you suppose to do?
Possible the best solution is to
purchase and install a good quality water
filter, which will provide you with cleaner and
better tasting water right from your own
faucet.
Before
you purchase a water filter, you must first
consider what you want the water filter to
remove from the water, as each type of filter
varies from manufacturer to manufacture as well
as from type to type.
Some filters are a waste of money as
they remove hardly anything from the water,
while other filters can actually remove too
much from the water.
For this reason, it is very important
for you to read closely the package for a list
of chemicals, which the filter will remove.
Stand-alone
water filters are an inexpensive model of water
filtration system.
However, when considering a stand-alone
system for your home, please be aware that they
must be constantly refilled.
Therefore, if you have a large family
you may wish to consider purchasing a water
filter that you attach to your faucet instead,
as they can provide an unlimited supply of
fresh water.
There
are two other factors you to consider when
purchasing home water filters, and they are
convenience of installation and maintenance.
Some highly complex systems require
professional installation.
These systems should not be installed by
the average weekend do-it-yourselfer.
Even if you are a very accomplished
do-it-yourselfer, by installing the system
yourself you could void any warranty the system
may have.
In addition, such systems also require
any and all maintenance be performed by a
certified manufacture representative. Other filter systems are extremely easy to install and
repaired or maintained even for someone who has
difficulty telling the difference between a
Philip’s head and a flat head screwdriver. However, a good rule of thumb is to weigh the initial cost of
any filter system with the expected maintenance
cost.
In
today’s economy, it pays to do your research
before you make any purchase as it helps you
get the best product for your family and home
at the best possible cost.
